Fixing a Firefox illegal operation
July 1st, 2007 | by useful | in Useful Tips |Ever since I installed noscript I’ve been having trouble with web pages that have embedded movies in them. Firefox doesn’t like them. I have IETab installed so I could quickly bypass a page that was giving me an illegal operation.
Illegal Operation in Plugin
Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library
The plugin performed an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to restart Firefox.
Or it would say
Mozilla ActiveX control and plug-in support error
The plugin performed an illegal operation
Restart the broswer
To fix this I had to install the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin. If you don’t trust the link you can go to the Firefox Plugin site and scroll to the bottom and click on “Vers. 11 (XP, Vista)” in the Windows Media Player section.
I had some problems with the downloaded exe file not showing up in the Downloads history. I had to go to the folder where firefox saves my files and run it from there. If you are curious if the Plugin installed correctly you can type “about:plugins” into the address bar in firefox and you should see a section that looks like this.

You also shouldn’t be getting any illegal errors.

I’m getting the 2nd error you mentioned:
“Mozilla ActiveX control and plug-in support error
The plugin performed an illegal operation
Restart the broswer”
and downloaded the Windows Media Player plug-in and it did nothing for me. I still get the same error. Any other suggestions? Its driving me nuts. lol
Thanks

Personally I downgraded from WMP11 to WMP10 out of frustration before I fixed the error by installing the plugin for firefox.
I would also check to see if the Digital Rights Managment plugin is installed correctly. In about:plugin there should be entries for
Microsoft® DRM
File name: npdrmv2.dll
DRM Netscape Network Object
and
Microsoft® DRM
File name: npwmsdrm.dll
DRM Store Netscape Plugin
If these are missing then the player plugin isn’t installed correctly.

These are probably a little more advanced but it would be something I would try if downgrading to WMP10 doesn’t work.
The Mozilla ActiveX plugin can cause this error. Removing the file “npmozax.dll” from the Firefox or Mozilla Suite installation directory plugins folder may stop the error.
Removing the files “GetFlash.exe” and “GetFlash.exe.manifest” from the Firefox or Mozilla Suite installation directory plugins folder and from the C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash folder may stop the errors.
The problem is often resolved by uninstalling Flash 8 or 9 and installing Flash 7.
This problem may be caused by a rootkit type virus.

Thnx, removing “npmozax.dll” from the plugins folder did it for me. Got flash working again.
